Mental Health Cuts – again – NAMI request

Received this in my email yesterday – just checked today.  I don’t know about you, but I am so sick of the breast cancer publicity that I refuse to buy anything with a pink bow and practically come unglued when people ask me to donate to their charitable cause at the cash registers.  My husband often looks at me when I’m in one of my moods to brace himself if I say something under my breath about contributing to mental illness.  Not one single establishment I visit has ever asked if I wanted to add money to my debit card to help the mental health society!  Still Taboo?

Subject: Re: URGENT! Need your help in preventing budget cuts to mental health services!!

Greetings Everyone,
NAMI Colorado is asking for your help in participating in a statewide “Letter Writing Campaign” initiated by NAMI Western Slope (Grand Junction and surrounding areas). Please read the email below from Leslie Kent, President of NAMI Western Slope.  The reason behind the “Letter Writing Campaign” is that a Joint Budget Committee hearing is scheduled for December 20th at which they will be discussing mental health funding.  It’s imperative that our voices be heard or otherwise we may lose crucial funding that provides vital mental health services that many of us rely on to keep our loved ones safe and stable. We must continue to fight the fight!
Attached are directions provided by Leslie Kent on writing the letters, as well as sample letters for you to use as a guide when writing your own letters. Your letters need to be personal, meaning they should express your own views and experiences. We also want to encourage consumers to write letters. NOTE: A sample guide letter is also included for consumers to utilize. It provides a list of common mental health issues that many consumers are forced to deal with when trying to obtain treatment.
Thanks so much for your support!!  Please scroll down to view Leslie Kent’s email.
Take care,
Cheri Bishop
